Picking your blog niche is one of the most important things you can do to be a successful blogger. Niching down sets you up for long term growth through Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. It also helps attract a specific and ideal audience of people and subscribers, who could potentially become customers in the future.

So nailing your blog niche is key. But people always say blogging is “oversaturated” right? I’m sure you’ve heard this. (By the way… EVERY industry is oversaturated, so there’s that). But the real reason people say this, is because they have NOT niched down properly! And when we don’t niche down properly, we work overtime creating content that our audience does not want or need.
Working overtime almost always leads to burnout, and before you know it your blog is sitting around collecting internet dust. And we don’t want that!
So how do you determine what your blog niche should be so that you actually drive traffic to your website and encourage readers to subscribe and come back for more.
It’s a combination of three things. – your passions, your uniqueness, and a problem you solve. Where those three things intersect, that’s your ideal blog niche.
You need to find a fun way to combine what you love and those little golden nuggets in your life that make you unique, so you can attract and truly serve your ideal audience! And once you combine those two things together, you almost always are already solving a problem for someone. But to be sure, just ask yourself this… Does my blog niche HELP someone do something that they might otherwise struggle with or not know how to do? (i.e. they are terrible at decorating and need tips on a budget; they just decided to become vegetarian and have no idea where to start and need quick meal options, etc.) If you are resolving some kind of pain point for your audience, you are more likely to turn them into subscribers and fans!

Finding your ideal blog niche means you will attract & keep your ideal audience, and REPEL everyone else. Because yes! You do NOT want to appeal to everyone. You know what they say, when you try to please everyone, you actually please no one. Remember, repelling the people who aren’t your people is just as important as attracting and keeping the ones who are!
And when you niche down correctly, your blog grows more quickly and more organically long term. You cannot build a blog that generates growth and profit without nailing your niche. Without a specific niche, you will never optimize your SEO, and SEO = long term growth. You will also confuse the heck out of people (I know – I’ve done it!). So truly, the more specific your niche is, the more quickly you are likely to grow and monetize.
Now, I know you are probably thinking, “what about those lifestyle bloggers who talk about everything under the sun?” Yes. Those bloggers are out there. And some of them are MEGA successful. But they are the unicorns in this industry, and if you are starting from nothing, I would not recommend you go this route. That said, you also have to do what is right for you, but don’t say I didn’t warn you!

It’s also worth saying here… niching down does require a fair bit of INSIDE work. Sometimes we have mindset issues we need to work through, and limiting beliefs we need to address. Make sure you are picking a niche because it is RIGHT for YOU, not because you see someone else doing it and think you should try to create something similar. The first module of my course OWN Your Influence is specifically designated to the inside work and mindset work new bloggers need to do, because it’s THAT important. A lot of failure I have seen in the blogging world truly does come down to mindset and a lot of excuses. If you can work through that, and niche down properly for YOU and your personality, then you will be on the road to success my friend!
